First Woman To Vote
Honoured
Yesterday in San Carlos
homage was paid to 87
year old Bernarda
Vásquez Méndez, who was
the first woman to cast
her vote in Costa Rica
some 57 years ago.
On July 30, 1950, 26
women from La Tigra, La
Fortuna and San Ramón,
participated in a
plebiscite to define if
the residents of La
Fortuna and La Tigra
wanted to belong to San
Carlos or San Ramón.
The homage was organized
by the Instituto
Nacional de las Mujeres
(INAMU).
Each of the women
received a plaque and to
Bernarda the Instituto
Mixto de Ayuda Social (IMAS)
gave her a cheque for
¢600.000 colones in
recognition of being the
first woman to vote in
Costa Rica.
The executive president
of the INAMU, Jeannette
Carrillo, said that,
even today, women are
still discriminated. |
