"Romeria" to Cartago
Begins; Enjoy The Long
Weekend
Though the majority will
be making the annual
pilgrimage next
Wednesday and Thursday,
a small number have
begun their walk, taking
advantage of long
weekend.
Some walk as much as 300
kilometres in their show of
faith and devotion from
far away places like
Guanacaste and Gofito.
The Cruz Roja (Red Cross) and
Policía de Tránsito (traffic
police) will begin to
set up their command
post and check points
along the route from San
José to Cartago next
week.
Last year close to 2
million people descended
on Cartago and the
Basilica de la
Virgen de Los Angeles.
This year a similar
number of walkers is
expected.
If you considering the
walk, here a few tips to
make the trip a safely
and healthy:
- wear a shirt or
t-shirt that is highly
visible, reflective is
walking at night
- bring along a sweater
or jacket as it gets
cool at night
- a hat will help keep
the sun off your head
and an umbrella the rain
- put on a sunscreen
- comfortable shoes is a
must
- stop along the way to
rest and drink lots of
water
- beware of strangers
who are willing to offer
help
Due to the moving of the
July 25 to Monday, Costa
Rica will enjoy a long
weekend and though
August 2 is not a legal
holiday,
Government agencies,
banks and most
businesses will be
closed on Monday July
30, but will be open on
Thursday August 2,
though there is likely
to be a limited staff on
hand to provide
services, many employees
will take off work,
calling in sick or
taking vacation time, to
celebrate the religious
holiday.
