Panama Wants Nicaraguan
Ex-President Extradited
The "immediate arrest
and detention order" of
Nicaraguan ex President
Arnoldo Aleman, issued
by a Panamanian judge,
is meant for him to
appear in court in for
counterfeit money
charges.
According to a
communique from the
Supreme Court of
Justice, Judge Adolfo
Mejia, who reclaims
Aleman's judicial
process to happen,
attempts to prove the
supposed
misappropriation of
counterfeit us$58.2 million dollars
in Nicaragua by the
former president.
Aleman, known as "el
gordo" because he
weighed in at 135 kg ,
appeared in court for
corruption in Managua
and he was sentenced to
20 years, but he was
authorized to freely
move everywhere in the
country.
Legal experts consider
Aleman will never likely
go to Panama, due to the
existence of an
extradition treaty
between both nations.
Since 2004, Panama
Attorney's Office of
Anticorruption ordered
to freeze the us$9.4
million dollars
deposited in name of
Aleman and his relatives
in accounts in
Panamanian banks. |
