Children Unattended in
Honduras
The Honduran Childhood
and Family Institute (IHNFA)
recognized on Thursday
that, neglected by the
State, children face a
deplorable situation in
this Central American
country.
IHNFA chief Doris Garcia
said not much can be
done for these minors as
the available budget is
hardly enough to pay
salaries to employees.
We live in a country
where children scramble
with turkey vultures and
dogs for the trash sent
to the garbage dump by
the rich, lamented
National Human Rights
Commissioner Ramon
Custodio.
He criticized the role
played by the childhood
district attorney's
office and urged the
government of Manuel
Zelaya to promote
efforts in favor of the
children.
Both officials pleaded
for reversing once and
for all the problems
reflected in a report by
the Geneva-based
International Children's
Rights Committee, urging
the Honduran State to
harmonize local and
international
regulations and
establish a system to
protect minors against
violence.
This not only referred
to the nearly 2,000
minors murdered since
1998, but also familial
and school maltreatment
and sexual abuse. |
