Panama University
Rejects US Treaty
Prestigious University
of Panama energetically
rejected on Thursday the
signing of a Trade
Promotion Treaty with
the United States.
An Academic Council
resolution, the
university's highest
authority, considered
the legislative approval
of the agreement an
"anti democratic
imposition."
The university council
stressed that the
country has no idea of
the content of this
treaty, formerly called
free trade, which was
approved by on July 11
by the governing
majority.
This week's poll by a
respected national
consultant revealed that
barely 6.6 percent of
the people questioned
knew a lot about the
treaty that is now
waiting for US
congressional approval.
The Academic Council
resolution, signed by
acting Rector Justo
Medrano and General
Secretary Miguel A,
Candamedo, expresses
profound concern and
dissatisfaction with
treaty approval,
stressing the population
does not know the
consequences of the
changes or how they
could affect the
