Man Prefers Diet of Live
Animals Over Rice and
Beans
Although it may seem
incredible, a 34 year
old man is now into his
fourth year on a diet of
cats, dogs and live
animals, leaving behind
rice and beans, who
prefers to eat them
alive.
Douglas Barahona, a bull
rider from Cañas,
Guanacaste, says he
enjoys eating his
animals live, feeling
the animal squirm in his
mouth.
"I get up in the morning
and have breakfast with
whatever is around, a
pigeon or a chicken,
whatever, I grab it,
pull it by the head,
drink the blood, and
then eat it", explained
Barahona.
The man said he began
his unusual diet some
four years ago by
accident that to
dominate a bull, the
fresh blood of the
animals was the secret
to his strength.
Barahona, known locally
as "Tata", says he used
to eat the live animal
four days before riding
the bull and the day of
the ride, he would have
a bat or two in his bag
and would eat one
minutes before getting
on the bull. Now he has
made it a part of his
regular diet.
Barahona says that
eating live animals is
his secret to
exceptional strength and
to dominate the bull and
says he will continue
with his diet forever
and now no longer seeks
a plate of rice and
beans, or a fried steak
or cooked chicken,
preferring to take to
the mountains and hunt
his food.
Barahona says that he
has tried all kinds of
animals, and is
especially hard to find
dogs and cats in his
neighbourhood, since his
neighbours know of his
strange habit, and do
not leave their pets
outdoors.
Tata added that he has
no qualms of sinking his
teeth into a snake that
crosses his path and
relates the story of one
time, seeing a snake in
a tree, carefully got
close, grabbed it by the
head and with extreme
force took a bite
splitting it in half and
then ate it all.
Earthworms and buzzards
are also on his list of
favourite meals, while
frogs and toads are his
least favourite.
Barahona told of the
story when eating a
toad, his tongue went
numb for several days.
However, he added, if
nothing else is around,
a toad meal will do.
To make his point, Tata
gave a demonstration of
his unusual eating
habits for the cameras
of the Diario Extra,
where he demonstrates
how he eats a chicken -
live of course.
