Honduras May, Like Costa
Rica, Go Way of China
The decision by Costa
Rica to begin diplomatic
relations with China
last June 1, maybe
copied by other Central
American nations, who
see the Chinese market
as a great opportunity
with more than 1 billion
people.
The president of
Honduras, Manuel Zelaya,
said he is thinking of
establishing diplomatic
relations with China and
breaking off relations
with Taiwan the way
Costa Rica did.
Honduras is one of 24
remaining nations that
has diplomatic ties with
Taiwan.
Zelaya, said he is
reacting to Honduran
business who are asking
him to follow the Costa
Rican example and knock
on China's door to
establish relations and
expand exports.
The president of the
Consejo Hondureño de la
Empresa Privada, Mario
Canahuati, affirmed that
the business sector
supports the
establishment of
commercial relations
with China and to take
advantage of its markets
and investments.
"The majority of
important investments in
Latin America are coming
from China, a country
with enormous capital",
said Canahuati.
Canahuati added that
there exists the
possibility that, unlike
in Costa Rica, Honduras
may be able to establish
relations with China
without breaking ties
with Taiwan.
China has made it clear
that countries wanting
to trade with it must
break off relations with
its rebellious province. |
