Peace with Nature
Costa Rica has chosen to
give a respite to the
environment and to
become the world leader
in its preservation. In
order to do so, the
nation launched the
“Peace with Nature”
initiative.
NASA astronaut Franklin
Chang and President
Oscar Arias attended the
inauguration of the
program at the National
Biodiversity Institute (INBio
in Spanish).
Addressing the audience,
particularly some 250
schoolchildren who
gathered at INBio, Dr.
Chang told them, “The
Earth is our spaceship
and the only one we have
as now. Therefore, we
must take good care of
it.” Dr. Arias pointed
out that “each time that
we use the car to go
where we could walk, or
that we throw trash in a
river or in a lake, is
as if we were throwing a
bomb against the Earth.
” Scientist Mark Imhorff,
of NASA Goddard Space
Center, surprised the
audience by showing
satellite images that
show environmental
damage: fires,
deforestation, and
thawing, among others. |
