Panama
Mexican billionaire
Carlos Slim plans to
invest in Panamanian
infrastructure, energy
and telecommunications
projects, Panama's La
Prensa newspaper said
Thursday.
Slim will invest via
infrastructure company
Impulsora del
Desarrolloy Empleo en
America Latina (Ideal),
which will invest
us$16.6 billion dollars
in 57 projects, 45
percent of them in
Panama, the new paper
said, citing a Bank of
Mexico report.
"One of Ideal's
subsidiaries, Cicsa
Panama, has won the
tender for hydroelectric
projects in Bajo Mina
and Baitun, in the north
of Chiriqui province,"
the newspaper said.
Another Ideal
subsidiary, Cilsa
Panama-Minera Maria, won
the tender to excavate
the first phase of the
Panama Canal extension.
Slim is also interested
in mobile phone services
in Panama. Panama's
market is currently a
duopoly with Cable and
Wireless and Telefonica
Moviles Panama being the
only service providers.
U.S. magazine Forbes
lists Slim as the
world's second richest
man, but a Mexican
research firm said last
month that rising stock
values had moved him up
to the top spot. |
