Nicoyans Upset Over Decision To Hold Cabinet Session in Liberia On July 25th
The decision by he government to hold its cabinet session in Liberia and not Nicoya this coming July 15, has many "Micoyanos" upset.

July 25 is celebrated as the day of the "Anexión del Partido de Nicoya".

It is an historic day when the people, of their own volition, decided to join Costa Rica, which now forms the province of Guanacaste.

Traditionally, the government has held its cabinet sessions in Nicoya on July 25, when the president and his ministers descend on the small town and hold the government session in public.

For Emanuel Ajoy, former deputy and creator of the law that establishes Nicoya as the official celebration site for July 25, said "the decision by the government violates the law".

"President Arias and his ministers have a duty to come to Nicoya and give face to the public who expect respect for the decision of 1824", said Ajoy.

On July 25, 1824 the Partido de Nicoya decided to become part of Costa Rica, integrating the regions of Nicoya and Santa Cruz into Costa Rica. At the time the region of Liberia opposed the annexation due to its commercial and social ties the region had with Nicaragua.
