Wal-Mart Opens Megastore Today
Looking for something to do today? The new Hipermas megastore in Escazú opens its doors today at 9:30am.

This will be the fifth store of the Hipermas chain owned by Wal-Mart and is the first to be built under the same design and specifications of the Wal-Mart chain of stores.

The four preceding Hipermas stores were built by its former owners.

Wal-Mart originally announced that the new store would be branded Wal-Mart, however, in the last month, as construction neared completion, Wal-Mart decided it would be best to continue with the Hipermas brand, which has high recognition in Costa Rica, along with its other brands Mas x Menos and Palí.

The new building is over 30.000 square metres (320.000 square feet of floor space), employing more than 600 people directly and thousands more indirectly.

The roads around the store's location had to be widened with exit ramps, electrical posts relocated and a pedestrian bridge built from the Montealegre shopping centre across the street to accommodate the heavy traffic that is expected to generate by the megastore.

Wal-Mart officials say that the store includes a selection of more than 50.000 products.
