Emergency Declared For
Limón and Northern Zone
The rains of the last
day have affected more
than 2.000 people in the
areas of Limón, Heredia
and the northern zone.
The Comisión Nacional de
Emergencias (CNE) last
night declared a state
of emergency for the
cantones of Guatuso,
Upala located in the
northern zone and Sarapiquí,
in Heredia, as
wells as Siquirries,
Guáplies and Matina in
the province of Limón.
The affected areas
received more than eight
hours of constant rain,
provoking a number of
rivers to overflow their
banks, causing flooding
and damaging some 30
bridges.
Many had to leave their
homes and take refuge in
shelters set up by the
CNE. As of this morning
(Friday) more than 300
people were being housed
in five shelters
operated by the CNE.
The rain is expected to
diminish today, but it
will be sometime before
the area returns to
normal. |
