2008 Marchamo Due

Tomorrow, Monday,
December 31, is the last
day to pay your 2008
Marchamo - the annual
vehicular circulation
permit.
Come January 1, Tránsito
(traffic police) will
begin ticketing and in
some cases confiscating
vehicles who have not
paid their marchamo. In
addition, the INS will
levy fines and charge
interest for late
payment.
Payment can be made at
soem 800 points of sale
at banks and independent
insurance agents offices
througout the country.
However, be warned, some
banks are closed
tomorrow, like the BAC
San José which will
re-open on Wednesday.
While some banks are
open Monday, some will
be closed. It is best to
check your bank's
website for the holiday
hours schedule.
Although the Marchamo
can be paid at any point
of sale, individual
banks offer promotions
to their customers.
Promotions range from
the BAC San José is
having a draw for gifts
and paying the Marchamo,
Aval/Bano Uno is
offering a 10% discount
and Scotiabank allows
its customers to pay
with their credit card
without any surchage.
The Banco de Costa Rica
is offering a draw for
three vehicles, a
Mitsubishi Lancer, a Kia
Rio and Nissan Tiida for
customers who pay their
Marchamo with the bank.
In addition, the BCR
offers to deliver the
Marchamo free of charge
to your home or office
if it is paid online.
The Banco Nacional has a
similar offer to its
customers.
To find out the cost of
the 2008 Marchamo for
your vehicle, click on
http://portal.ins-cr.com/csoa/csoaportal.aspx.
Click on the type of
vehicle and enter the
license plate number for
the amount owed, that
includes any unpaid
fines and any past
marchamo if went unpaid.
This year the
"obligatory" insurance
portion on all vehicles
is ˘13.475 colones. This
amount is not defined by
the type or year or
value of the vehicle, it
is applied to all
private vehicles.
Included in the cost of
the 2008 Marchamo is the
property tax on the
vehicle, which is based
on the "fiscal value",
and 13% sales tax among
other items like stamps
for "fauna silvestre"
and municipal tax.
In addition, the INS is
offering a "Seguro
Su-Vida" policy option,
an life insurance policy
that pays between ˘3.2
million and ˘6.4 million
colones in death and
funeral benefits. The
policy can be purchased
at the time of payment
of the Marchamo and is
of benefit to those who
don't have the
additional insurance on
their vehicles.
