"Muni" Planning Street
Parking Along Paseo Colón
Be prepared for more
traffic chaos along
Paseo Colón following a
decision by the
Municipalidad de San
José (Muni) to allow
street parking on one of
the five lanes on one of
the busiest streets in
the country.
The plan is to allow
street parking at night
as it is been done now
along Avenida Segunda
and anyone who driven at
night along the Avenida
can attest to the
nightmare and chaos that
the street parking has
caused.
The night only parking
along Avenida Segunda
has now extended to
Sundays and holidays.
According to San José
mayor, Johnny Araya,
that the decision to
allow the street parking
is part of the
municipality's plan to
make Paseo Colón a
tourist attraction.
This time, however, the
municipality will firs
seek the co-operation fo
the Ministerio de Obras
Públicas y Transportes (MOPT)
- pubic works and
transport ministry -
which owns and regulates
traffic on the road.
when the municipality's
decision was made to
allow street parking on
Avenida Seguna,
municipal officials
painted parking lines on
the street without the
MOPT approval, a
situation that caused a
lot of confusion.
Drivers who parked on
the street got fines
from Tránsito (traffic)
officials before the
MOPT ordered the
municipality to remove
the lines.
An agreement between the
municipality and the
MOPT was subsequently
reached.
Araya said that the
municipality will invest
¢50 million colones
during 2008 to revamp
Paseo Colón and make it
part of the tourist
attractions of the city.
The municipality will
spend the money to
repair sidewalks, erect
benches for people to
sit, plant more trees to
spruce up the avenue,
install more trash cans
and better security.
No start date for the
work has been set.
Araya said that the
avenue already has
restaurants, hotels and
shops attractive to
tourists and believes
that street parking at
night will enhance the
area's attraction to
tourists.
The mayor was firm that
street parking during
the day will not be
permitted and traffic
along Paseo Colón will
be move as usual. |
