Pressure
The Policía de Tránsito
says it has issued 5.836
traffic tickets between
December 1 and 25, a
good number of which
were for drunk driving.
A total of 301 tickets
were issued for alcohol
related offences, 202 of
which were for drunk
driving - driving over
1.0 blood alcohol
content and 99 for
between 0.50 and 0.99,
Other tickets were
issued for various
offences like not
stopping for a red light
(165) and not respecting
other traffic signals,
like stop signs (596)
and obstruction of the
roadway.
In addition, Tránsito
officials issued 271
tickets to "taxistas
piratas" (pirate or
informal taxis).
During the period
Tránsito officials were
on the scene of 1.967
collisions, 29
pedestrians being hit by
vehicles, two of which
died, six vehicles
flipping over and 21
swerving off the road.
Germán Marín, head of
the traffic police, has
vowed a hard line
attitude for the holiday
season in an attempt to
curb the number of
deaths on roads, mainly
from drinking and
driving and speeding.
An effort is also being
made by the Policía de
Tránsito to curb
reckless driving by
maintaining a presence
of officers on the
highways, keeping an eye
on vacationers coming
and going from the
beaches and resorts. |
