Guatemala Plans Salary
Rise Analysis
The Guatemalan
government is planning
to analyze on Wednesday
if it will increase the
minimum wage in 2008,
after the negotiations
between employers and
workers in the National
Salary Commission.
Guatemalan President
Oscar Berger announced
that the Executive will
meet to decide how much
the rise will be,
something that has been
done in the last four
years, due to lack of
consensus between
workers and employers,
or its representatives.
President elect Alvaro
Colom recommended that
the outgoing president
increase seven percent
of the wages, which
rises to 44.58 quetzals
a day to agricultural
works, and 45.82, around
$6 dollars to the rest
of the activities.
Berger has until
December 31 to make a
decision about the
minimum wages, which
should come into force
on January 1, 2008. |
