Seven Arrested For Human
Trafficking
Costa Rican authorities
have arrested four men
and three women
suspected of human
trafficking, said the
director of the
Organismo de
Investigación Judicial (OIJ),
Jorge Rojas.
Director Rojas said that
the group maintained
links with an overseas
human trafficking ring
to smuggle Ecuadorians,
Bolivians and Peruvians
into the United States,
through Central America.
The group covered as
much as us$7.000 per
person.
According to police
records, at least 30
people pass through
Costa Rica illegally
every week.
Rojas said Ecuadorian
and Peruvian illegal
travelers usually first
go to Panama by boat,
enter Costa Rica at Paso
Canoas, then travel to
San José by private car
and head for Peñas
Blancas to cross into
Nicaragua to continue
their bid to reach the
United States.
Bolivians usually arrive
by plane at Costa Rica's
Juan Santamaria
International Airport
before joining the
others on the way to
Peñas Blancas, as Costa
Rica does not require
visas from Bolivians.
