Colombia Does Not Want
Negotiation
A Colombian daily
lambasted the Colombian
government Tuesday for
refusing any political
negotiation and
sabotaging Venezuela's
steps toward a
humanitarian exchange
with the Colombian
Revolutionary Armed
Forces (FARC)
guerrillas.
In an opinion column, El
Tiempo said perhaps
former presidential
candidate Ingrid
Betancourt may be
released because the
French government is
ready to negotiate, and
the Colombian
authorities would like
to take that pressure
off.
The daily congratulated
by Colombian Senator
Piedad Cordoba and
Venezuelan President
Hugo Chavez for
achieving what the
government of Bogota has
not been able to do in
six years.
At the same time it
pointed out that the
Colombian Executive
placed every kind of
obstacle to the
arbitration, trying to
assure such mediation
would be unviable in the
future.
"The Colombian
government has lied to
all those it told it is
ready for an agreement
with the FARC forces,"
the Colombian newspaper
declared.
It also noted that the
Executive "has admitted
mediators to reduce
international pressure,
trusting they will all
fail, while the
kidnapped people are
released or killed in
military operations,
which political cost is
paid by FARC."
