Honduras Very Poor in
Human Development
Honduras is the second
worst in Central America
for development and
improvement of the
standard of living of
its citizens, according
to the 2007-2008 Human
Development Report of
the UN Development
Programme.
This report, which
provides information on
health, education and
earnings, placed this
country 115th, only
ahead of Guatemala,
which came in 118th.
Meanwhile, Nicaragua has
gone up to 110th place,
El Salvador to 103rd,
Belize to 80th and
Panama to 62nd, El
Heraldo news stated.
The UNDP report
attributes Honduras's
stagnation to lower and
unstable economic
growth, lack of job
generation and an
increase in violence,
among other factors.
Another issue for the
region identified by the
UNDP experts is the
possible increase in
hurricanes and rise of
sea level, meaning
perhaps a third of
Caribbean beaches lost
due to climate change.
This would be difficult
for a region dependent
on tourism.
The increased number of
people infected with
dengue is another of the
critical points
highlighted by the UNDP
