Bolivia to Try Mayors
for Treason
The Bolivian government
announced Monday it
would accuse opposition
prefects Leopoldo
Fernandez, of Pando, and
Manfred Reyes Villa,
from Cochabamba, in
court for countermanding
Army commands and
calling the people to
rebel.
Meanwhile the military
command reasserted its
commitment with the
Constitution.
Bolivian Presidency
Minister Juan Ramon
Quintana said the
prefects' action was
"subversive" against the
Bolivian Constitution
and political stability.
Fernandez asked the
commanders of the
military forces in Pando
to disobey a high
military command because
he regarded it
"cowardly" and
"traitorous" to support
the current Bolivian
social process.
Shortly after, Reyes
Villa also called
soldiers and military
officers to behave
according to Bolivian
legislation and the
Constitution.
Defense Minister Walker
San Miguel said this
"Appears to be a war of
nerves by people who
want to create chaos in
the population, when
there is a real
convoking to dialogue."
Representatives from
conservative and civic
political organizations
started several hunger
strikes in protest
against the
redistribution of the
Hydrocarbon Direct Tax
and the renovation of
the Constitution;
however some leaders
said they would not
dialogue and would
travel to the United
