European Union Eating Up
Costa Rica Bananas
More Costa Rican bananas
are headed to Europe as
exports to the European
Union (EU) increased
16.3% during the first
four months of this
year.
Omar Sánchez, head of
the Estadísticas de la
Corporación Bananera
Nacional (Corbana), said
that exports to the EU
went from 14.9 million
boxes in the first four
month period of 2006 to
17.4 million in the same
period this year.
The countries eating up
more Costa Rican bananas
are Belgium, Italy,
Portugal, Spain and
Germany, while
consumption in Sweden,
England, Holland and
Ireland dropped.
Sánchez said the Spain
was the country with
single largest import
increase.
During the first four
months of this year, the
European Union
represents 47% of all
banana exports, while
the United States
remained the largest
buyer of Costa Rican
bananas at 53% of all
exports.
