Circunvalación To Be
Completed by 2010, MOPT
MInister Assures
The Ministerio de Obras
Públicas y Transportes (MOPT)
said yesterday it will
negotiate a deal with
the company now building
the San José-San Ramón
for the completion of
the Circunvalación -
ring road - in San José
with an expected
completion date of 2010.
MOPT minister, Karla
González, confirmed
yesterday that that
would be the best option
to complete the road
that has been waiting
decades to be finished.
"As soon as we complete
the San José-San Ramón
deal we will ask
Autopistas del Valle S.
A. for a proposal on the
construction of the
bridge over the Quebrada
Rivera, one of the main
parts missing of the
north end of the
Circunvalación", said
the minister.
The Circunvalación now
runs from La Uruca,
through the Hatillos and
Desamparados on the
south and weaving north
through Zapote and San
Pedro ending in
Guadalupe. Construction
of the missing section
through the north end
from Guadalupe back to
La Uruca has been
stalled for many years.
The missing link is a 5
kilometre section that
runs through Calle
Blancos, Tibas and
Giocoechea and would
reduce traffic volume on
the south side and
through downtown San
José.
González explained that
the government's plans
are to come to an
agreement with
Autopistas to start the
construction in 2009
that would last about
six months and the road
be ready for 2010,
before the end of term
of the Arias
administration.
The minister explained
that the focus is
currently on building
the San José - San Ramón
route, but once that is
finished, emphasis will
be on completing the
north end of the
Circunvalación.
However, before that can
happen, the minister
said that the government
has to complete the
expropriation of the
lands along the route,
which may altered
slightly as engineers
assess the best route
taking into account the
number of homes and
businesses that will be
affected.
The constructions of the
Circunvalación de San
José was started some 30
years ago, in the
planning stage for
almost 50, and still to
be completed.
In the last decade, the
Circunvalación has seen
the addition of an
overpass at the
Desamaparados rotonda
and the current
construction of an
underpass at San
Sebastián, as traffic
continues to increase
daily.
