ACAM Ordered To Suspend
Collections While in
Appeal

Musicales de Costa Rica
(ACAM) has been told by
the Sala IV
(Constitutional Court)
to suspend its
collection on royalties
until further advised
following an appeal by
the Bar La Guaria Numero
Dos in downtown San
José.
ACAM is the local
collector of royalties
on songwriter and music
copyrights.
The problem surfaced
when the two bars were
applying for a liquor
license for a new
Karaoke bar,
respectively, and could
not obtain such licenses
due to the fact that
they owed large sums of
money to ACAM.
The bars say they could
not afford the high
payment in one cash lump
sum and thus appealed to
the Sala IV, that found
evident violations of
fundamental rights of
businesses and stopping
them from continuing
their activities.
The Sala IV ordered the
suspension of immediate
payment to ACAM and must
submit a report within
three days before the
court will render a
decision on future
workings of ACAM. |
