Costa Rica To Have New
Maps
The system of reference
used to create maps
during the past century
will give way to a new
process that is much
more precise and
accurate.
According to Alexander
González, coordinator of
the "Programa de
Catastro y Registro",
soon future the maps of
Costa Rica will
incorporate Global
Satellite Positioning
(GPS).
"The contents of the map
will be the same, the
new system of
co-ordinates doesn't
change the shape of the
country", said González.
The exactness will offer
many benefits to
professionals who daily
work with maps and
owners of land can be
assured of a more
accurate precision in
describing their
properties in the land
registry.
González added that
municipalities will also
benefit from the new
maps as they will be
able to have more exact
information for the
collection of property
taxes.
"Our country has been
suffering problems of
insecurity with real
estate, problems
detected in the weakness
of the plans and the
notaryprocess. What we
are looking for is the
plans and register are
uniform", said Juan
Manuel Castro, president
of the Colegio de
Ingenieros Topógrafos.
Castro added that the
maps will be in two
scales, national and
regional and that the
first designs are ready
however must be approved
by the Instituto
Geográfico Nacional
before they can be
published.
