Argentina reiterates
support for one-China
policy
The Argentine government
adheres to the one-China
policy and opposes any
attempts for the entry
of an entity into an
international
organization under the
name of "Taiwan,"
Argentine Foreign
Ministry said in a
communique on Friday.
In response to the
United Nations'
rejection of Taiwan
authorities' application
for UN membership under
the name of "Taiwan",
the communique said
Taiwan is an inalienable
part of China, and the
UN rejection was proper
according to Resolution
2758 of the UN General
Assembly that was passed
in 1971.
The Argentine government
said Taiwan's alleged
push for a referendum on
its entry into the UN is
not only a hopeless
attempt for achieving
Taiwan authorities'
goals, but will also
fuel tensions in the
region as well as
destroy the efforts
toward seeking a
peaceful solution.
The Taiwan authorities
under Chen Shui-bian
last month submitted a
letter to UN
Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon,
raising the
controversial issue of
applying to join the UN
under the name of
"Taiwan."
The UN Secretariat
rejected the application
citing Resolution 2758,
which restored the seat
of the People's Republic
of China in the world
body.
