Bishops Call for
Nicaragua to Address
Violence
The Catholic bishop of
Chontales, Nicaragua,
Socrates René Sándigo,
denounced the “easy
money” from narco-trafficking
destroys “lives and
society”, while at the
same time warning that
if this is not brought
under control soon, it
will “get out of hand.”
During the Mass in which
he blessed the
Nicaraguan National
Police before the image
of the Virgin Mary of
the Assumption in the
cathedral of Juigalpa,
the bishop urged
authorities to continue
working against narco-trafficking
while praying that “the
Virgin will protect the
police in their work of
guaranteeing the safety
of Nicaraguans.
” Nicaragua, as well as
other Central American
republics, is facing a
wave of violence linked
to organized criminal
gangs that also operate
in the United States.
The gangs, known as “maras”,
have been linked not
only to narco-trafficking
but also human
trafficking and Middle
Eastern extremist
groups.
In his homily, the
bishop also touched upon
other social problems
such as domestic
violence and abortion.
As was reported in La
Prensa newspaper, the
bishop said that in
Nicaragua “we have
advanced, for example,
in legislatures,
constitutions, and code,
but there are also
shadows that indicate a
society in stagnation.”
He also noted that
domestic violence “is
born like a little seed
of disrespect for one
another, of raising
one’s voice brusquely
against another, of
disrespect for the
other, and later that of
violating one’s own
family, one’s own
child.”
The bishop of Granada,
Nicaragua, Bernardo
Hormbach told La Prensa
on August 17 that the
Catholic Church is
gravely concerned with
the administration of
justice overall in
Nicaragua.
