Latest UCR TLC Poll Puts
The "Si" 12% Ahead of
the "No"
The government sees with
optimism the most recent
poll by the Universidad
de Costa Rica (UCR),
where the "Si" has a 12%
advantage over the "No".
Rodrigo Arias, ministro
de la Presidencia, said
he considers the numbers
real and is confident
that Costa Ricans will
vote to approve the
Tratado de Libre
Comercio (TLC) come
October 7.
The poll was taken by
the UCR's Escuela de
Estadística del
Instituto de
Investigaciones Sociales
revealing a 50.2% of the
voters whould be in
favour of the trade
agreement with the
united States, while
only 38% are not in
favour.
The poll also reveals a
68.3% is expected to
take part in the October
7 referendum, a
percentage well above
the 40% established by
the Tribunal Supremo de
Elecciones (TSE) as the
minimum number of voters
required for the
referendum to be
binding.
Rodrigo Arias added that
the during the weeks
leading up to the
referendum vote the
government will take the
opportunity to inform
all Costa Ricans on the
trade deal, and above
all so that voters can
take into account the
different reasons and
make a correct decision.
Meanwhile, president
Oscar Arias, along with
a number of legislative
deputies, visited San
Ramón asking the
Ramonenses to vote "Si".
President Arias is
expected a large number
of communities in the
coming weeks to talk
about the benefits of
the TLC.
For UCR investigator,
Edgar Gutiérrez, there
is no doubt that the
Costa Ricans will vote
on referendum day as
indicated by the results
of the poll taken
between July 12 and 19.
Gutiérrez added that
during the poll,
investigators found that
four out five people
polled responded that
they did not know, or
had little or next to no
information regarding
the TLC, which he says
will be the greatest
challenge for both the "Si"
and "No" campaigns.
Rodrigo Arias showed
concern that many Costa
Ricans may go to the
voting booth without
sufficient knowledge on
the subject and said
that it is the
obligation of all
citizens to inform
themselves on the
subject, especially in
the weeks left before
the referendum, so that
they can make a reasoned
and conscious decision
for the direction of the
country.
Arias added that by
informing themselves,
Costa Ricans can refute
the series of "lies" and
"myths" that been said
over the TLC during the
past few months.
The UCR poll also asked
those polled if they
thought the TLC was good
or bad for the country.
Of the those who would
vote "Si", 90% said the
TLC would be good for
the country, while of
those would vote "No",
81% qualified the trade
deal as "nocivo"
(harmful). |
