US Firm to Expand Panama
Canal
The US CH2M Hill
corporation won the bid
for the contract to act
as manager of the Panama
Canal expansion program
Friday.
The gigantic work for a
third set of locks to
allow huge ships to pass
will start on September
3 in a symbolic
ceremony, in which the
presence of former US
President Jimmy Carter
is expected.
The Panamanian
government will then
commemorate the 30th
anniversary of the
signing of the
agreements between
Carter and then
Panamanian President
Omar Torrijos, which
allowed Panama to
recover sovereignty of
the Canal and its
military zone.
The Panama Canal
Authority said the US
company will supply
support and that the
firm is recognized for
its leadership in the
supervision of
infrastructure projects.
