Braulio Carrillo
Nicknamed "Death Road"
The name given to the
Braulio Carrillo highway
forming part of route 32
that connects to San
José to Limón is "la
ruta de la muerte"
(death road) is not by
accident but because of
the accidents, fatal
accidents that occur on
this road almost daily.
The latest victims of
the "road to death" is a
fifteen year old girl
that was riding in the
back seat of a Honda
when it lost control due
to an oil spill on the
road surface. The Honda
collided head on with a
Nissan pickup truck.
The driver of the pickup
told Tránsito officials
that there was nothing
he could do to avoid the
collision which occurred
at kilometre 18, four
kilometres west of the
toll booth.
Three others were
injured in the accident
and were able to get
medical attention thanks
to the efforts of the
Extra TV42 crew that was
travelling the route at
the time.
The driver of the Honda
said he ran a distance
to get help since one of
the busiest highway in
the country counts with
no cellular service for
most of the highway.
Víctor Sánchez said he
ran to the toll booth
where he collapsed after
alerting authorities of
the accident.
Saturday, two more
people died on the same
stretch of highway in
two separate accidents,
bringing the death total
for the weekend to
three.
Walter Matamoros Campos,
according to
authorities, sideswiped
three small trucks and
lost his life when he
slammed his vehicle head
on into a tractor
trailer.
In the other accident,
Olger Trejos Herrera,
lost his life when he
was riding his bicycle
on the highway and hit
by a tractor trailer. It
appears that the bicycle
did not have any lights
of reflectors and nor
was Herrera wearing any
bright clothing to be
visible in the darkness
of the night. |
