Panama Looks at Child
Labor Cruelty
The cruelty of child
labor is a new form of
slavery, Panamanian
Education Minister
Miguel Angel Canizares
said Wednesday at the
opening ceremony of a
Central American
ministerial meeting
dedicated to fight that
scourge.
Canizares stressed
information that 2.44
million children work in
Central America and the
Dominican Republic, most
of them in dangerous
conditions.
In Panama, the minister
stated, where there are
three million
inhabitants, 40 percent,
equivalent to 1.8
million people, are poor
and of those, 550,000
are in extreme poverty.
The most horrifying
child labor is that of
indigenous people, due
to the ostracism of
indigenous communities,
lacking land and income
sources.
Canizares, who evoked
Jose Marti's thought
that "children are born
to be happy," called to
create a common social
fund for indigenous
children to go to
