Costa Rica signs UN
Convention on Migratory
Species
Costa Rica has signed
the United Nations
Convention on Migratory
Species becoming the
convention's 130th
member nation, the
Foreign Ministry said
Monday.
The convention, which
was signed Wednesday
last week, commits Costa
Rica to work toward the
conservation, management
and sustainable use of
migratory species.
Costa Rica is one of the
20 so-called
mega-diverse nations
because of its massive
variety of wildlife
species and its
geographical location is
a stopping off point for
many migratory birds.
More than 25 percent of
Costa Rica's land is
currently given some
kind of environmental
protection. The nation's
National Protected Areas
System in particular
includes wetlands that
are famous worldwide for
their sea birds, water
mammals and migratory
turtles.
The UN convention aims
to conserve terrestrial,
marine and avian
migratory species across
their global range.
