Case Against Burgos
Getting Stronger
Luis Fernando Burgos,
the former public
defender that is accused
of killing his wife, is
sinking deeper every day
as witness after witness
for the prosecution
testifies how Burgos
admitted to killing his
wife and in some cases
soliciting their help.
The first witnesses to
testify against Burgos
was his former
girlfriend, also a
public defender, who
said she was afraid to
come forward sooner,
fearing reprisals from
Burgos, after she
refused to help him
hours after the murder.
Yesterday, a former
boyfriend of Mauren
Hidalgo, testified of
how Mauren was afraid of
her husband, that on six
occasions he had beaten
her and that she feared
something horrible was
going to happen to her.
The former boyfriend,
Hugo Santamarķa, also a
public defender, assures
that Mauren called his
office begging to help
her as she could not
take her husband's
abuses anymore.
Burgos, who has refused
to give his testimony,
as the is the normal
course of action in
triasl in Costa Rica,
until he has heard all
the evidence against
him, has maintained his
innocence from the first
hours of his wife going
missing.
Burgos was beside the
family at the Mauren's
funeral as the greiving
husband, telling
authorities that he had
no idea what had
happened to his wife,
alleging a kidnapping,
though no ransom demand
was ever received.
The body of Maureen, 28
years of age, who was
also a public defender,
was found on July 2006 a
week after being
reported missing and
although authorities began to suspect the
husband, without a body or
any trace of the what had
happened to the woman, police
sat patiently for the drama to
unfold. |
