Higher Prices Being
Sought For Taxi and Bus
Fares and Electricity
and Water
Loosen the purse strings
for taxi service, bus
fares and electricity
and water rates are
going up, as the
Autoridad Reguladora de
los Servicios Públicos (Aresep)
- regulating body on
public prices and
services - is facing a
wave of petitions for
services.
During the month, the
Aresep will be holding
public hearings for
requests in increases in
taxi and bus fares and
water and electricity
rates.
In the case of water,
the Instituto
Costarricense de
Acueductos y
Alcantarillados (AyA),
is asking for a 35%
increase that will
affect all water and
sanitary sewer bills.
The Aresep is also being
asked to debate the
issue of regulating
water meters.
Six bus companies are
asking for an increase
that would effect the
fares on the routes:
Tejar de El Guarco,
Ciudad Quesada, Grecia,
Turrialba, Limón-Sixaola,
Liberia, Puntarenas
centre and in San José
routes to San Pedro,
Curridabat and Zapote.
Taxi operators also want
to the right to adjust
their taximeters to
increase fares by 8%.
Coopeguanacaste, the
company that provides
electrical service in
Guanacaste, is asking
for 9.48% hike in rates.
The common ground cited
for the increases is
rising fuel costs.
The Aresep is be holding
public hearings in
different areas of the
country to allow
discussion and public
input to the requests. |
