"NO" Vote Would Win If
Referendum Held Today
A study by the
Mathematics School of
the Universidad de Costa
Rica (UCR) del Proyecto
Estructuras de la
Opinión Pública, says
the "No" vote is leading
by 8% over the "Si" vote
on the issue of the
Tratado de Libre
Comercio (TLC) - free
trade agreement with the
United States.
According to the study,
34.5% are against the
trade deal, while 26.4%
would vote in favour,
while 16.7% said they
would not vote and 22.4%
were undecided.
A earlier similar study
done by the Escuela de
Estadística of the UCR,
gave "Si" the advantage,
which is in
contradiction with the
present poll.
The Escuela de
Estadística study
conducted at the
beginning of June, 49.7%
were in favour of the
TLC, while 37.6% said no
and the rest, 12.7% were
undecided.
The results of the
latest study clearly
gives the "No" the
advantage.
According to Javier
Trejos, director of the
Centro de Investigación
de Matemática Pura y
Aplicada (Cimpa) of the
UCR, the difference is
due to the fact that the
latest study was more
extended and not limited
to the opinions only on
the heads of the family.
Trejos added that the
interviews in the latest
study were done "cara a
cara" (face to face) and
not over the telephone,
like the study done by
the Escuela de
Estadística, which gave
the "Si" the advantage.
Trejos said that the
latest results clearly
show that if the
referendum were to be
held today, the "No"
vote would win, in
accordance with the
projections of the
study.
