Diego Naranjo New Costa Rica
Surf Champion
Diego Naranjo achieved his first
big goal of this year, he became
the new Costa Rica National
Champ. This is the first
national award for the member of
the Billabong team since the
Costa Rica Surfing Federation
runs Costa Rican Surf.
This championship makes him
stronger to face the second part
of the ALAS tour which will
start in Brasil next June.
The fight for the championship
was not easy, other three big
surfers made great performances
to obtain the first place. But
Diego Naranjo’s deep
concentration helped him to beat
his opponents. Juan Carlos
Naranjo (Diego’s younger
brother), Luis Vindas and Jairo
Pérez were also finalists on the
last day of the national round
that took place in Jacó,
Puntarenas.
At the beginning of the final
round Juan Carlos Naranjo took
the first place and seemed to be
the winner. But five minutes
before the competition ended
Diego rode two very good waves
that gave him a combination of
15.50 points which was the
highest score of the heat. The
result: Diego Naranjo Costa
Rica’s National Surf Champion.
“I want to thank God, my family,
my sponsors, my friends and
especially my girlfriend Lisbeth
who knows exactly how much I’ve
longed for this title” said
Naranjo to Surfpress.
Diego Naranjo will stay in Costa
Rica, where he will continue his
training to be prepared for his
next international competitions.
His priority will be the ALAS
tour, where he is on the
eleventh place after competing
in all the dates of the first
quarter of the year.
