Argentine environmentalists
protest paper mill outside

Inhabitants of Argentina's Entre
Rios province let loose dozens
of chickens Monday in front of
Finland's embassy in Buenos
Aires to protest a paper mill
being built by Finnish firm
Botnia in neighboring Uruguay.
The protest was staged by the
Environmental Assembly of the
city of Gualguaychu, which
borders Uruguay's Fray Bentos,
the site for the paper mill.
"One of the most important
poultry industries in the region
is located in Entre Rios, which
generates thousands of jobs and
has hundreds of producers. When
they build the paper mill,
nobody is going to eat the
region's chicken," a protester
told journalists.
While some protesters were
offering free chickens to
passers-by, others were holding
boards with slogans reading "eat
them now before Botnia poisons
them all."
The government officials of
Argentina and Uruguay opened
talks on Friday in Spain to seek
a solution to the crisis
unleashed by the paper mill's
construction.
