ICE To Recycle Old Cellular
Phones
Have an old cellular phone that
doesn't work, is too antiquated
or just plain no good and don't
know what to do with it? The
Instituto Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE) will accept
the phone for recycling.
Beginning next Wednesday, April
25, all ICE agencies will have a
disposal unit for the old
phones.
According to an ICE press
release, the purpose of the
recollection is to protect the
environment as some of the older
units have batteries and some
components, that contain toxic
materials that if dispose of
incorrectly contaminate.
ICE says that the units brought
into the agencies will be taken
to a transformation and storage
of the toxic material. From
there, the toxic material will
be vacuum packed and sent to a
foreign recycling centre as
Costa Rica does not have such.
"ICE considered a necessary
alternative to offer a way
of disposing those cellular
phones that are beyond their
useful life and considering that
between 80% and 90% of cellular
phone can be recycled", said
Marlon Valerio, an ICE
spokesperson.
