Guatemala Starts Police Purge
Guatemala's Ministry of Interior
began a purging of the National
Civil Police (PNC) on Thursday,
to try to resolve the security
crisis and violence prevailing
in the country.
One of the first steps announced
by new Minister of Interior
Adela Torrebiarte was to demand
the resignation of several Army
officials who occupy various
posts in the PNC.
About 20 military officers,
appointed by former PNC Chief
Erwin Sperisen, occupy key posts
in arms control, internal
affairs, logistics, inspection
and personnel.
It was also announced that the
new chief of the PNC Criminal
Investigation Department (DINC),
Capt. Alexander Gomez, will
dismiss 60 percent of his staff.
The officials involved in the
killing of three Salvadoran
Central American Parliament
deputies and their driver were
all members of DINC.
PNC s reputation among the
population is so low that,
according to a VOX Latina
survey, 90 percent of
Guatemalans distrust the
institution, which they consider
one of the most corrupt in the
country.
