Mexico Sets Costa Rica Sugar Tariff Rate Quote
The Mexican government established a tariff rate quote (TRQ) for Costa Rice to comply with the Mexico-Costa Rica Free Trade Agreement.

The duty free quota for that country has been set at 50,845 metric tons (MT). Importers must have an import permit, otherwise the sugar will be subject to general import tariffs.

To end speculation and stabilize sugar prices the Mexican government decided to authorize two sugar TRQ's one for 90,000 MT and other for 100,000 MT.

Part of the quotas will be filled with sugar from Costa Rica as well as from a 26,761 MT TRQ allocated to Nicaragua. The rest of the quota is eligible to be imported from all other WTO member countries.

Mexico and Costa Rica signed a free trade agreement in what was Mexico’s first FTA with a Central American country. The FTA has yielded significant results. Total trade multiplied by ten between 1994 and 2005, reaching us$1.2 billion.

Mexico is the only country in the world with active free-trade treaties that cover North American and the entire European Community.
