Nicaragua President Presents Energy

Nicaraguan President Enrique
Bolaños proposed Tuesday an
Emergency Energy Law that
suggests increasing the price of
electric power tariffs to end
blackouts in the country.
Bolaños recommended that the
Nicaraguan Energy Institute (INE)
readjust the price of that
service in line with
international costs of fuels.
That initiative seems a
capitulation faced with demands
by national energy distributor
Union Fenosa, which reported $21
million loss for tariff deficit.
That company and others in the
sector have pushed the Executive
for months to support them with
subsidies or rectify the value
of energy services to the
population.
However, Bolaños project did not
have an urgent nature and the
National Assembly will send it
to a special commission.
INE reminded that in Nicaragua,
nearly two million people, half
of the population, have lacked
power for years and Fenosa ha
done nothing to solve that
situation.
The state entity took Fenosa to
court for breaking the agreement
signed in 2001 with the
government.
Meanwhile, more energy plants
were disconnected this week,
which aggravates the domestic
power shortage.
