Costa Rica Registers 4500
Assaults
The Costa Rican Official
Judicial Research Department (IRB)
reported Monday that there have
been 4,500 reported assaults in
the first eight months of 2006,
most of them with firearms.
The criminal acts take place at
the rate of one an hour, with
most in San José, the capital
(3,327 attacks through August
30), the IRB reported to La Nación.
Authorities recognize an
increment of crimes like auto
theft and home robberies.
The IRB reported that three
gunmen assaulted the residence
of Elections Supreme Court Judge
Luis Antonio Sobrado, in Escazú, an
exclusive area west of the capital.
Jorge Rojas, director of
the Organismo de Investigación
Judicial (OIJ), said
to stop this wave of violence it
is necessary to tighten
security, improve prevention and
establish programs of control of
probable criminals.
Ministro de Seguridad Pública (Public Security Minister),
Fernando Berrocal, affirmed he is
promised to increase the
ministry budget 35 percent next
year to buy patrol cars,
motorcycles and hire more
police.
