Cuba: NAM Summit, Union Unprecedented
Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque affirmed Saturday that the 14th Non Aligned Movement Summit not only has created conditions for a new phase and greater role for itself, but has evidenced “a unity and cohesion without precedent.”

At his meeting with the press, the chancellor noted that the Summit began September 11 with high officials, was followed by foreign ministerial sessions that analyzed and defined the five documents for the declaration, and now the 56 heads of state or government, plus the Croatian president as guest, are preparing to sign it in consensus, with representatives of the other leaders of the 118 nations.

The diplomat said the texts agreed upon were the principle matters for NAM, particularly defense of peace, sovereignty and the rights of the nations to self-determination.

He highlighted such declaration contents as combating terrorism, rejection of a single worldview and promotion of multilateralism, the right for the most underdeveloped countries to progress, and the need for a new world economic order.

The Havana Summit will issue a Final Declaration, A NAM Proposals, Principles and Role Declaration, one referring to methodology, and another supporting the cause of the Palestine people.

First and foremost, insisted Perez Roque, this has taken place in an atmosphere of consensus and unity, and he praised the Third World forum´s condemnation of the economic and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba for more than 45 years.
