Egypt and Costa Rica Restore Diplomatic Relations
Egypt and Costa Rica restored diplomatic ties Wednesday after a meeting of both countries' foreign ministers in Havana, the Costa Rican government announced.

Egypt decided to restore relations after the Costa Rican government said it would move its embassy in Israel from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv, Costa Rica's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Costa Rican President Oscar Arias said the decision to move the embassy in Israel sought to "amend a historical mistake" and bring Costa Rica in line with UN resolutions.

Foreign ministers Bruno Stagno, of Costa Rica, and Ahmed Aboul Gheit, of Egypt, met in Havana Wednesday on the sidelines of the Non- Aligned Movement (NAM) summit.

Costa Rican diplomatic sources said Jordan might also restore relations with the Central American country.

Stagno, quoted in the ministry statement, said the restored relations "will allow for a greater political and diplomatic rapprochement with the Arab and Islamic world in general, as well as opening up commercial opportunities with those markets."
