DR Authorities Admit Dengue
The Dominican Republic admitted
that cases of dengue in the
country are getting out of hand
and predicted this year will be
as much of an epidemic as 2000.
Elizabeth Gomez, general
director of Epidemiology in this
country, stated Monday that only
the participation of the
community could possibly keep
the disease controlled and the
system only works with those who
need attention and are
hospitalized.
Dominican infectologists and
pediatricians agreed that dengue
has reached today levels of
epidemic and called for public
health authorities to warn the
population of its dangers.
So far, there are 2,876 cases of
dengue registered, while in 2005
the figure was 2,860 cases with
18 deaths.
About 241 cases of dengue were
reported in August last year and
the figure has reached 608 this
months, said disease specialist
Clemente Torrero, who was a
consultant at the Pan-American
Health Office.
