G-20 in Brazil Rehashing WTO
Following a Brazilian call, the
developing countries affiliated
to the Group of 20 (G-20) are
meeting in that capital Saturday
to encourage resumption of the
World Trade Organization
negotiations.
The dialogue was interrupted
last July 23 due to the
inflexible stances of the US and
the European Union, committed to
preserving their protectionist
agricultural policies to the
detriment of the economy of poor
countries and world trade.
The director of the Brazilian
Chancellery s Economic
Department, Roberto Azevedo,
said the meeting is an important
space to ponder the need to
bring back the suspended talks.
He said there will be no
negotiation or final
conclusions, as "it will be just
the first step to prevent the
issue from being shelved, and
find an alternative leading to
the resumption of talks."
The G-20 currently comprises 23
countries from Latin America,
Asia, and the Caribbean, who
came together in 2003 to fight
for the reduction of subsidies
and high taxes imposed by the
richest countries.
