Nicaraguan Candidate Accused of
Corruption
The Nicaraguan National Assembly
ordered an official
investigation of ex banker
Eduardo Montealegre,
presidential candidate of the
Alianza Liberal Nicaraguense (ALN),
given alleged financial
irregularities.
The decision against Montealegre
is part of a domestic inquiry by
some ministries and agencies
into the scandal of the
Negotiable Investment
Certificates, known as CENIS.
Montealegre is accused of
arranging a bond issuance that
pushed the nation into a 400
million dollar debt.
Lawmakers said he was aware of
the risks he ran if he engaged
in issuing and selling those
bonds, and they also requested
an investigation of the
professional record of Noel
Ramirez, ex president of the
Nicaraguan Central Bank, to
determine his participation in
the scandal.
They seek to open investigations
of all officials who were
involved in deals that led to
the elimination of entities such
as Interbank and the Industry
and Trade Bank of Nicaragua.
In 2002 the CENIS crisis ended
in the bankruptcy of four banks.
