Increased Lightening Activity
Normal During Rainy Season
September and October are the
two months with the most intense
rain of the year. It is the last
two months in the six month long
rainy season, and the worst for
flooding and mudslides,
especially in the coastal
communities.
Weather experts warn of the
dangerous and to take
precautions.
This year, in addition to the
heavy rains, the weatherman
predicts an increase in
lightening activity, jolts of
electrical discharge that can be
deadly.
The first victim from a
lightening strike came last week
when 63 years old Cristóbal
Sandoval was struck by
lightening in Cuidad Neilly.
According to statistics, one
person a month dies from being
struck by lightening in an
estimated 350.000 lightening
strikes a year (or almost one a
day).
Experts recommend to stay
indoors during a lightening
storm and don't open any doors
or windows. Do not use
electrical appliances and stay
clear contact with metallic
components. And especially don't
take shelter under a tree.
Statistics also reveal that the
area of San Carlos, north of San
José, near the Arenal Volcano,
receives the largest amount of
lightening activity.
