Nicaragua Steps Up Dengue Drive
Nicaragua's Health Ministry (MinSA)
began a drive to fight the
source of an epidemic of dengue,
with 534 cases reported by MinSA
in 2006.
The numbers are lower compared
to 2005, which came in at 773,
but there may be up to 5,000
cases with high fever,
bone-muscle ache and diarrhea.
The most acute phase,
hemorrhagic dengue, kills in few
days.
Minister Margarita Gurdian said
the health network is being
supplied with proper medication
while the specialist ready for
an epidemic.
She added that the malady
already forced Honduras and El
Salvador to declare a state of
emergency, adding that
increasing visits to Nicaragua
of Salvadorans may increase
chances for contagion.
The MinSa called for people to
eliminate every potential
breeding site for aedes aegypti
mosquitos, the known
transmitter, and activated
volunteers to fumigate and will
make house-to-house calls.
