Pothole Situation Getting Worse in  Downtown San José
The rainy season is taking its toll on the streets of downtown San José and has drivers upset even more. There isn't a major artery in the downtown core that isn't full of potholes and efforts by the municipality have been for none.

Anyone driving along Avenida 1, the major route from East to West that runs through San José is perhaps the worst, especially between Calles 10 and 20, where it is one pothole after another and in traffic impossible to avoid.

And not only are drivers upset at the situation, merchants as well are screaming for the municipality do something about the situation as they are losing business.

Avenida 3 is not much better.

Around the area known as the "coca cola" bus terminal where buses to upscale areas of Escazú and Santa Ana and to the beach areas of Jacó and Quepos/Manuel Antonio, the heavy traffic of buses has left crater after crater and as the rain falls, they convert into small lakes.

The pothole situation has caused numerous accidents in the area as drivers try to avoid the holes and possibly suffering damage to the their vehicles.

On the south side, Along Avenidas 4 and 6 the situation is a little better, but not that much, as potholes keep appearing as the rainfall intensifies.

Avenida 2, the major artery that runs through San José to San Pedro, the road has become a total disgrace. Patches of filled in potholes make up most of the road surface. The painted lanes are gone erased by the heavy traffic and constant patchwork.

In front of the Junta de Protección Social de San José, in addition to potholes, the roadway as it turns from Paseo Colon to Avenida 2 floods, causing a dangerous driving hazard every time it rains. The same occurs in front of San Pedro mall on the east side.

The Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transporte (MOPT) says that the repairs in the downtown area are the sole responsibility of the Municipality of San José.
