Democracy Closed
(Prensa Latina)
Costa Rica´s Legislative
Assembly rejected 24 motions
that would allow those opposed
to the Tratado Libre de
Comericio (TLC) - Free Trade Agreement with
the US - to express their opinions
on that topic, a source from
that body denounced on Thursday.
Deputy José Merino, from Frente
Amplio, said that the majority
of Costa Rican Congress members
continue refusing appeals to
democratize debates on that
agreement, which was subjected
to discussions at the Foreign
Trade and Foreign Relations
Commission.
"They talk about democracy, but
close those debates where the
TLC opponents could express
their reason to reject the
agreement. They won t meet with
the students and hold democratic
debates," said the legislator.
Merino warned that position
favors an increasing
nonconformity in the population
and leaves people active
resistance as the only way to be
heard.
